Meaning & History

Derived from the Hebrew name אַבְרָהָם (ʾAvraham), it can be interpreted as meaning "father of many" or as a combination of Abram 1 and הָמוֹן (hamon), which signifies "many" or "multitude." According to the Bible, the patriarch Abraham was initially named Abram, but God later changed his name (refer to Genesis 17:5). Along with his father Terah, he led his family, including his wife Sarah and nephew Lot, as well as other followers, from Ur to Canaan. He is revered by Jews as the progenitor of the Hebrew people through his son Isaac, and by Muslims as the forefather of the Arab people through his son Ishmael. As an English Christian name, Abraham gained popularity following the Protestant Reformation. A notable bearer was the American president Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), who worked to end slavery and guided the nation through the Civil War.
