Meaning & History

Derived from the Hebrew name אֲבִיגָיִל (ʾAviḡayil), which translates to "my father is joy," combining the roots אָב (ʾav) for "father" and גִּיל (gil) for "joy." In the Old Testament, it belongs to the wife of Nabal. Following Nabal's death, she married King David as his third wife. As an English name, Abigail gained popularity after the Protestant Reformation and was favored by the Puritans. In the Bible, Abigail describes herself as a servant, and from the 17th century onward, the name was used colloquially to refer to servants, particularly after the publication of the play The Scornful Lady (1616), featuring a character named Abigail. The name fell out of favor then but experienced a resurgence in the 20th century.
