Meaning & History

From נְבוּכַדְנֶאצֲּר (Nevuḵaḏnetstsar), the Hebrew form of Akkadian Nabu-kudurri-usur meaning "Nabu protect my eldest son", from the god's name Nabu, kudurru "eldest son", and an imperative form of naṣāru "to protect". A 12th-century BC Babylonian king bore this name. A 6th-century BC king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire also bore it — he captured Jerusalem, destroyed its temple, and deported many citizens, as told in the Old Testament.
