Meaning & History

From Greek Ματθίας (Matthias), a variant of Ματθαῖος (see Matthew). In the New Testament, this is the apostle chosen to replace the traitor Judas Iscariot. It was also the name of Hungarian kings (spelled Mátyás), including Matthias I who made significant reforms to the kingdom in the 15th century.
