The English version of the Greek name Ἰησοῦς (Iesous) is derived from the Aramaic name יֵשׁוּעַ (Yeshuaʿ). Yeshuaʿ is a shortened form of Yehoshuaʿ (see Joshua). Yeshua ben Yoseph, commonly known as Jesus Christ, is a pivotal figure in the New Testament and the founder of Christianity. According to the four gospels, he was the son of God and the Virgin Mary, who fulfilled the prophecies of the Messiah in the Old Testament. He preached for three years before being crucified in Jerusalem.
