Meaning & History

From the Germanic name Hugo, from Old Frankish hugi or Old High German hugu meaning "mind, thought, spirit" (Proto-Germanic *hugiz). It was widespread among Frankish and French nobility, including Hugh Capet, the 10th-century French king who founded the Capetian dynasty. The Normans introduced it to England, where it became especially popular after the 12th-century bishop Saint Hugh of Lincoln, renowned for his charitable works. It was also borne by kings of Cyprus and the crusader kingdom of Jerusalem. In Ireland and Scotland, it serves as the Anglicized form of Aodh and Ùisdean.
