Meaning & History

Means "army man", originating from the Old German components heri meaning "army" and man meaning "person, man". This name was brought to England by the Normans, later fell out of use, and saw a resurgence in the English-speaking world during the 19th century. It was the name of an 18th-century Russian missionary to Alaska who is now venerated as a saint in the Orthodox Church, although in his case, the name is a transliteration of German. Another notable bearer was the American author Herman Melville (1819-1891), known for his novel Moby-Dick.
