Meaning & History

Of uncertain meaning. It appears in Thomas Malory's 15th-century Arthurian compilation Le Morte d'Arthur, where Sir Gareth (also called Beaumains) is a brother of Gawain. He accompanies Lynet to rescue her sister Lyonesse from the Red Knight. Malory based the name on Gaheriet or Guerrehet from French sources. It may have Welsh origins, perhaps from Gwrhyd meaning "valour" or Gwairydd meaning "hay lord".
