Il a été introduit en Angleterre par la maison allemande de Hanovre lorsqu'elle a hérité du trône britannique au XVIIIe siècle, bien qu'il ne soit devenu courant qu'au siècle suivant. L'auteur et aventurier américain Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) était un porteur notable de ce nom.
