Meaning & History

The Latin feminine version of the Roman family name Caecilius, which stems from the Latin term caecus meaning "blind". Saint Cecilia was a legendary 2nd or 3rd-century martyr who was sentenced to death for refusing to worship the Roman gods. Despite attempts to suffocate her, she was ultimately beheaded. She later became the patron saint of music and musicians. Because of the saint’s popularity, the name gained widespread use in the Christian world during the Middle Ages. The Normans introduced it to England, where it was typically spelled Cecily. The form Cecilia gained popularity in England during the 18th century.
