Meaning & History

Latinized version of the Greek name Ἀλέξανδρος, which translates to "defending men" from the Greek words ἀλέξω (alexo), meaning "to defend, help," and ἀνήρ (aner), meaning "man" (genitive ἀνδρός). This name was also used in Greek mythology for the hero Paris and appears in several characters in the New Testament. The most renowned individual with this name is Alexander the Great, the Macedonian king who, in the 4th century BC, expanded his empire across Greece, Egypt, Persia, and parts of India. His fame and the subsequent medieval legends about him contributed to the widespread use of his name throughout Europe. The name has been borne by rulers such as kings of Scotland, Poland, and Yugoslavia, emperors of Russia, and eight popes. Notable individuals who carried this name include the English poet Alexander Pope (1688-1744), the American statesman Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804), the Scottish-Canadian explorer Alexander MacKenzie (1764-1820), the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837), and the Scottish-Canadian-American inventor Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922), who is credited with inventing the telephone.
